Days Out

The cottage and surrounding area offer something for everyone at any time of year. Perfect for spring, summer, autumn and winter breaks, it’s situation is in close proximity to many tourist attractions and towns:

Rye

The medieval town of Rye is just 3 miles away, set on a hill, steeped in history with its labyrinth of cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and architecture, the town feels like it has been suspended in time. Rye is a real treat for food lovers with its many trendy bistros, pubs and tea shops. The harbor with its local fishing fleet, awe inspiring churches, buildings, castle and heritage centre, fascinating book shops, art galleries, old English sweet shop, boutiques, crafts and antiques venues; there really is something for everyone.

Hastings

The seaside town of Hastings is 16 miles to the west of Camber. It is known for the 1066 Battle of Hastings, fought on a nearby field where Battle Abbey now stands. The Norman ruins of Hastings Castle, once home to William the Conqueror, overlook the English Channel. With smugglers caves to explore, museums and art galleries to visit, an old town and country park, Hastings is a must see for visitors to the region.

Bodium Castle

Bodium Castle is one of the most famous castles in Britain. Owned by the National Trust, this fourteenth century moated castle was built as a defence and a home by Sir Edward Dallingridge, a former knight of Edward 111. With rooms, spiral staircases, towers, embattlements, an impressive gatehouse and displays exhibited, the castle gives a real impression of life in a bygone era.

Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch

The world famous Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch steam railway runs for 13.5 miles and is one of Kent’s top attractions. The toy and model exhibition and working model railway at New Romney station is fascinating and will keep both children and grown-ups intrigued – an enjoyable and nostalgic day out. The railway has themed event days, in particular the spooky Halloween train and Santa special ride to visit Santa in his grotto should be booked well in advance.

Winchelsea

The small, ancient town of Winchelsea is a hidden gem 2 miles to the west of Rye. Once a major hub for the medieval wine trade, with hidden wine cellars of the old port time beneath the broad streets; this seaside town is unspoilt with a pub, tea shop, church of St Thomas the Martyr, three medieval gates and a fascinating museum (which is open daily during the summer). Winchelsea Beach is an undeveloped, peaceful area with shingle at high tide and sand at low tide, ideal for walking and shrimping. Swimming is safe and Winchelsea has regularly received a Clean Beach Award.

We would recommend a 4-mile walk following the sea wall eastwards, stopping at the Bird Reserve, following the River Rother towards Rye and returning across the tracks past Camber Castle.

Dungeness

The National Nature Reserve of Dungeness is known as the desert of England, the area is ideal for exploring and hiking and is the second largest shingle formation in the world. With several RSBP hides and lots of local wildlife, this is a great place to spend some time. There is an iconic power station, an old lighthouse (which is often open to visitors) and a steam railway which runs from Dungeness to Hythe.

Lydd Carting

Lydd Karting is one of Kent’s premier tracks, open weekdays, with karts suitable for drivers from 4 years upwards. There are age restrictions as drivers must be 5 to 7 years old to join Bambino karting, 8 to 15 years old to compete in Juniors, 16 and over to race in senior class.
